James McCann served for six years as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps of the United States Army, with a primary focus in criminal prosecution. While in the Corps, he also worked extensively in government procurement in the field of research and development.

Since 1989, McCann has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa College of Law. He currently serves as a senior adjunct settlement judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma, and as a member of the panel of mediators for the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.
